PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - U.S. Open champion Justin Rose thought his ball might have moved. Then he was convinced it didnt. Only after he got up-and-down to save par and looked at the replay on three televisions did he see the slighest movement that came with a stiff penalty Saturday in The Players Championship. The two-shot penalty turned his 71 into a 73. Instead of being five shots behind Jordan Spieth and Martin Kaymer, he was seven shots back. "That was a bitter pill to swallow at the end of a battling day," Rose said. "In some ways, its my own fault for trying to be my own rules official." Rose missed the 18th green to the right and set up over the ball to play a delicate chip. Suddenly, he backed away when there appeared to be movement right after he lightly grounded his club. He called over Sergio Garcia. They watched the replay on a video board. "We both clearly look at the evidence and look at the replay and say, No, absolutely the ball didnt move," Rose said. "But under 50 times magnification in the truck, maybe the ball moved a quarter of a dimple toward the toe of the club. Obviously, if the ball moved, it moved. And I get assessed an extra stroke penalty." Rose was penalized under Rule 18-2b for causing the ball to move at address (one shot), and then an additional shot for not replacing it. He might have been able to save himself one shot by calling for an official to go through the incident. Rose said the grass was soft and uneven, which he thought might have given the appearance that the ball moved. "Ive gone from trying to chip in to make 3 to walking off with a 6," he said of his double bogey. "Disappointing. But in the same way, Im glad now that at least the right decision has been made. The ball moved. Obviously, I made a mistake." Rose was not spared by an addition to the "Decisions on the Rules of Golf" this year (18/4) that would waive the penalty if a ball movement was not "reasonably discernible to the naked eye at the time" and required enhanced technology. The fact he quickly backed away from the shot was evidence that it was discernible. Even so, this took what Rose called "four trucks and different technology" to sort out. Before signing his scorecard, he looked at a replay on NBC Sports and it looked fine. European Tour rules official David Probyn weighed in with some concerns to make sure it was right, and Rose said he went to a second and a third trailer to see different television views "where they really zoomed in." "The movement ... was virtually not visible," he said. It was reminiscent of the BMW Championship last year in Chicago, where Tiger Woods was penalized two shots when video showed his ball moved ever so slightly as Woods was removing loose twigs around it. Woods was adamant that the ball only oscillated, even after video evidence. He was penalized two shots. In both cases, no advantage was gained. But the Rules of Golf require the ball to be "played as it lies." "It has to be the right result," Rose said. "Because if the ball moves — whether it moves an inch, if the ball moves a hair — the ball moved. And Im happy now. My conscience is clear. Ill sleep better tonight knowing that, eventually, the right decision was made." But he wasnt entirely happy. "No advantage gained, and obviously now a big disadvantage, unfortunately," he said about the two-shot penalty. "From where I was standing you could tell it was kind of hooking," said Ausmus, Detroits first-year manager. "Pretty quickly off the bat, I was pretty confident it was going foul." It ended up foul by a few feet, and Phil Coke went on to strike McCann out. Then the Tigers took advantage of the reprieve, scoring in the bottom of the ninth to beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on Thursday. Alex Avilas two-out single off the wall in right gave Detroit the victory. The Tigers, still chasing Kansas City for the AL Central lead, pulled even with Seattle in the race for the American Leagues second wild card. The Yankees are three games back. A day after David Price gave up nine straight hits, the Tigers sent Kyle Lobstein to the mound for his first major league start. The rookie performed well, allowing one earned run in six innings. Then Detroits bullpen held off New York until the Tigers scored in the ninth off Shawn Kelley (2-5). Victor Martinez led off with a double through a shifted infield, then Kelley walked J.D. Martinez before striking out Nick Castellanos and pinch-hitter Torii Hunter. Avila followed with a drive to right that Ichiro Suzuki couldnt quite get to. Kelley flung his glove to the ground as soon as Avila connected. "Thats about as bad as Ive felt walking off a mound in my career," Kelley said. "I got myself in a hole, but then I got the two outs I needed, and I had a chance to keep the team alive. But I hung a slider, and Alex Avila can hit that pitch. Most guys can hit that pitch." Coke (2-2) got one very eventful out for the win. Hiroki Kuroda allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings for New York, but hes still without a victory over the Tigers in his career. Hes beaten baseballs other 29 teams. Avila opened the scoring in the second with a sacrifice fly, then Jacoby Ellsbury tied it in the third with an RBI single. McCanns RBI groundout in the fourth put New York ahead, and Rajai Davis tied it with a run-scoring single in the fifth.dddddddddddd CRUCIAL START With Anibal Sanchez still recovering from an injury -- and doubleheaders on the schedule last weekend and this weekend -- the Tigers have needed spot starts from some less familiar names. Robbie Ray and Buck Farmer both failed to get out of the second inning late last week, but Lobstein was solid, allowing only four hits and a walk. "Its a close race and theyre trying to win every game," he said. "I understood that, but at the same time, youve just got to go out there and treat it as any other day." Lobstein was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after the game. The Tigers purchased the contract of right-hander Evan Reed from the Mud Hens. Ausmus announced that LHP Kyle Ryan will make his major league debut Saturday when he starts as part of a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox. OFFENSIVE WOES: Since that eight-run inning against Price, the Yankees have scored only two runs in 15 innings -- and that was against the unproven Lobstein and Detroits erratic bullpen. At one point Thursday, New York made 16 straight outs. TRAINERS ROOM Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka was on the field before the game throwing 49 pitches in a simulated game. Manager Joe Girardi said Tanaka was able to use all his pitches. The Japanese star hasnt pitched since July 8 because of a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. Tigers: RHP Joakim Soria (left oblique strain) threw off flat ground Tuesday and Wednesday and felt no pain. He is scheduled to throw again Friday at a longer distance. ... RHP Luke Putkonen was scheduled to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment with Class A West Michigan on Thursday night. He has been sidelined since April 19 because of right elbow inflammation. UP NEXT Yankees: Chris Capuano (1-3) takes the mound Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Toronto. Mark Buehrle (11-8) starts for the Blue Jays -- he is 1-12 lifetime against the Yankees, and has lost his last 10 decisions. Tigers: Detroit begins a three-day, four-game set in Chicago against the White Sox. Justin Verlander (11-11) pitches Friday against Scott Carroll (5-8).
